EVTEK University of Applied Sciences and Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia merged into Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences which began operations on 1 August 2008. The Metropolia has four fields of study: technology, health care and social services, economics and business administration, and culture, all of which will provide teaching also in English.The students will number some 14,000 and the staff about 1,100.
The new and competitive higher education institute measuring up to international standards specialises in innovation and cater for the special needs of the metropolitan area. The training programmes involve close cooperation with businesses and the labour market. This has two main benefits: it improves the students' job opportunities and provides the labour market with skilled labour. Metropolia builds on the heritage of EVTEK being Finland's leading institute of technology providing education, training and R&D services in the areas of technology, business and design. Also, EVTEK has been internationally recognised and awarded for its innovative curriculum and utilization of learning technologies as it has coordinated and participated in numerous innovative projects in the area of learning technologies, such as Ariadne, Knixmas, NCEC, NetPro, CustomDP, and Seleac.
Metropolia can offer a solid basis for data communication and software systems design and development, as well as cover the whole of media engineering, including graphic, Internet, mobile, and digitalTV technologies. The Mobile Application Laboratory develops pre-commercial pilot systems for Mobile Data Networks and wireless handsets. The partners include the major companies of Finnish mobile and ICT industry.
Metropolia is responsible for the coordination of the technological R&D of the project, leads WP6 and contributes to the activities of WP2, WP4, WP7, WP8 and WP11.
